I’ve always loved the experience of a cutthroat shave at a barbershop.
Today is my best friend’s eldest son’s wedding, so we’re in Winston-Salem for the weekend.
Decided to treat myself and my son to the one pampering indulgence men should be allowed.
Gave me perspective.
Carlos, my barber, has been in the trade since 1995, following in his father’s footsteps, Winston Salem born and bred.
When I walked into his salon, it struck me as one of the most hi-end ones I had ever seen. Bright. Clean. Big plasma TV screens the customers can see from any chair. But something was odd.
Carlos was thin. And not just thin. Almost emaciated. Then just a few minutes into my shave he excused himself to go to the bathroom, as he wrapped a hot towel on my face.
This necessitated him unfolding a walker I had not noticed, with which he shuffled ever so slowly to the bathroom and then back to his position.
Carlos is not an elderly man. He clealry suffers from a serious condition that has wracked his body. (There are several framed articles on the wall from local newspapers celebrating his story and his salon. Carlos was a big guy, footballer build).
Nevertheless, despite what he suffers today, my time with him - he was such a meticulous barber, the shave took almost 40 minutes - was punctuated with witty banter, cracks about my accent, and stories about prior punters.
Not only is Carlos a consummate professional, he has a demonstrably indefatigable spirit and joy.
I salute Americans like Carlos.
